Healing :)

Happy Wednesday everyone! Sorry for taking so long to update, but I have been busy busy busy! This weekend was exciting if not painful. I was riding my bike with my friend Kristi, and majorly crashed it. I ended up having to go to the hospital. My arm and leg are COVERED in bruises, it was pretty brutal. I learned a valuable lesson however. PAY ATTENTION while riding. It’s crucial J I got my arm wrapped at the hospital and became dedicated to Ibuprofen for the remainder of my weekend. On Sunday I went to the Black Swamp Arts festival. It is in downtown Bowling Green every year. Basically a bunch of artists and vendors come together for a really fun weekend of music, art, and food! I only dropped by due to the on and off DOWNPOUR.  None the less, it was a good time. On Monday in my Intro to Social work Class our instructor decided to address the concept of ‘core values.” In other words, what are our moral beliefs, what we think and decide to be right and wrong.  To get the juices flowing, the teacher  threw out a few topics.
1)      Death Penalty
2)      Government assisted healthcare
3)      Treatment of criminals
4)      Gay Marriage and Gay adoption.
We split into groups and discussed the different issues. Then Professor Adams called the class together so all eight of us could share our varying opinions. The death penalty arose some passion amongst the class. One girl teared up and declared her need for revenge of the man who killed her family member. Other students protested, holding life at a higher value. Personally, the death penalty muddles my brain. I see both sides and I am extremely thankful to not have to make those decisions. Government health care and treatment of criminals were engaging but not very impassioned. Then came the last issue. Gay rights. I had kept silent most of class, and remained firmly in my pre-determined safe zone. I am very recently out of the closet, and I do not flaunt my sexuality. When several girls started advocating for only heterosexual marriage and say gay couples shouldn't have those rights, because of their religious views, I felt my muscles tense. Timidly, I raised my hand and waited. When I was called on to speak, I could feel myself shaking. I sat up as tall as I could and cleared my throat. "This is personal issue for me.. because I'm and Lesbian" I managed to say confidently (As feigned as that emotion was) I felt eighty eyes instantly fall on me. I could almost hear them hissing.. "Omg.. there is a LESBIAN in here?!?!" I pushed away my terror and continued to speak.
"I strongly believe same sex couples should have the right to marry. As far as civil unions go, separate is NOT equal. I respect all religions in this country and Im not fighting for the right to marry in a church where being gay is against their belief. I do however, think I have the right to a marriage reconized by our government. One of the most amazing things about this nation is our freedoms and seperation of church and state. When you illegible gay marriage, you blur that line" Still in shock that I had said something so revealing about myself, and in such an assertive manner in front of my classmates, I slipped out the door at the end of class.  Walking towards the union, two girls caught up with me.
"That was so amazing and brave" they said to me, "Congrats" A huge smile broke out of my face.
"Thanks" I responded back, attempting to not sound too dorky or thrilled. "I really appreciate that" I felt lighter and wanted to practically skip to my next class. I guess what I learned that day in class, was faith in people, and that pride... sets you free.

Busy day :)

Hey readers! I'm sitting in general writing class, I just turned in an absolutely enchanting essay about the ill effects of bottled water. Three whole pages! Today is campus fest, basically where a huge amount of stalls, tables, and booths are set up on the university lawn representing mostly clubs on campus but also businesses and other organizations. I'm excited to walk around and look at stuff, I am trying to find new ways to get involved. Also today I will be making some calls in hopes to find some volunteer work. Besides the fact I love volunteering, its also a requirement for my major. So wish me luck on finding someplace!! That I can get to on my bike.... haha

Old and New friends

This weekend at BGSU was definitely a compilation of many different experiences!! I went to a diversity celebration at this adorable little store on main street. Hannah and I enjoyed the experience and both got our first henna tattoos! I got to catch up with an old friend Kaila from middle school. I think we are going to make some memories together this year. Telling each other about literally years of our lives we had missed out on made me really think about how humans develop. The way people change and adapt is amazing to me. Kaila is not the same girl from sixth grade, but a mature and vibrant... dare i say it? Adult. Am I an adult? I'm almost nineteen, i'm attending college.. all things that point towards that conclusion. But I think maturity and adulthood have to do with a lot more than that. Experiences, independence, and attitudes. Kaila commented on how I seem more like "My own self" I don't think she could ever realize how strong of a compliment that is. Identity is important, and learning about yourself is this intricate process that I am sure is a lifelong task. Whats something that defines part of you? Peace and love,

The weekend awaits..

Just got back to my dorm room for the night. I went to the Stroh Center and watched Pirates of the Caribbean Four. Such a good movie. Then again... there are also some attractive people in it. Which helps :p Not many plans for the weekend. Trying to "go with the flow" as I have been wisely advised by a few trusted friends. I need to make sure I balance studying, and relaxing as I do have a few assignments getting close to the due date. Maybe I will check out Jerome library? Its supposed to be very nice. Today I found myself musing over the idea of first impressions. As the time passes here at college, I find myself just being further and further reinforced that you can NOT judge by appearances. I have always been very "gung ho" about the whole idea of loving everyone.. blah blah blah. But that is a little cliche, a not realistic. Instead put everyone you meet on an even playing field. LISTEN to the people around you. I have discovered some amazing people, and some pretty shitty ones as well. But most of all, I have been surprised by what lies under the surface. Something to think about.

Week of classes almost over! What an experience :)

So i'm proud to say i'm adjusting really well to college life. I am beyond thrilled that I get to sleep in until at least ten everyday. For the most part, my classes are engaging and fun. I struggle with boredom a bit in Biology lecture.. but what can you expect? I haven't made TOO much of a fool of myself yet. I fell down the stairs in a lecture hall in front of a million people, but caught myself! Oh and I walked into a random room, much to the surprise of some upper class men. Oops. I am having a little bit of a shyness problem, I am hoping to overcome. haha maybe bring out crazy party Margaret? Not sure she exists... but a little more outgoing would be sufficient. Clubs start next week. Excited for that! Peace,

SCHOOL NIGHT!

Classes start tomorrow!!! I'm so siked to start preparing to get accepted in the social work program. While I have a little time, I thought I would educated you about a few things I have learned in college so far.
1) Always be nice to your RA
2) When opening a conversation with someone you don't know, DO NOT talk about toilets... I learned this from someone else, not to fear readers I didn't make this mistake. But can I just clarify that I do NOT care about how warm the toilet seats are.
3) Go anywhere that has free food
4) I love bouncy castles
5) Bring fans, college can get SWEATY
6) Make rules with your roommate. My favorite: Dont sleepover with someone in your roommates  bed. Hehe that's all I will say.. we are keeping this blog PG. Maybe..
7) BE OPEN TO ANYTHING!

Have a great day! -Margaret Scott
